OVO FAQs
Are OVO pads compostable?
OVO pads are industrially compostable* according to the EN 13432:2000 standard. It means the material is designed to break down into compost within the specific conditions and timeframe of a large-scale, commercial composting facility. These facilities use controlled temperatures, humidity, and aeration to accelerate the composting process, which differs from home composting.
The EN 13432 standard, a European standard, describes the requirements for packaging that can be recovered by composting and biodegradation, and provides a test scheme and evaluation criteria for the final acceptance of the packaging. Although biodegradable materials can return to nature and disappear completely, they sometimes leave residue behind. Industrially compostable* materials, on the other hand, make a nutrient-packed product called humus, which is great for plants. In short, these products are biodegradable, but there is an added benefit.” (See source)

What’s the difference between a regular pad and an OVO pad?
Regular pads are typically made with plastic cores, synthetic fibers, and added fragrances. OVO pads, on the other hand, are:
- Made from plant-based materials (including bamboo)
- Free from plastics, toxins, dyes, and perfumes
- Verified by multiple global safety certifications
- Industrially compostable* and cruelty-free
See OVO Certifications page for more details.
How fast does bamboo grow?
Bamboo is one of the fastest-growing plants on Earth, it can grow up to 91 cm (35 inches or 3 feet) in just one day! That means it renews quickly, making it an incredibly sustainable resource for products that care for you and the planet.
How much of OVO products are made of bamboo?
Each OVO pad is made using a plant-based top sheet and absorbent layers that include bamboo fibers, chosen for their softness, breathability, and natural antibacterial properties. While not 100% bamboo, every layer is thoughtfully engineered to stay plastic-free, biobased, and industrially compostable* according to EN 13432 standards.
What makes bamboo better than cotton?
Bamboo outperforms cotton on nearly every front: More absorbent, naturally antibacterial, breathable softness & requires less water, no pesticides, and regenerates naturally. In short, it’s gentler for your skin and kinder to the planet.

Other FAQs
What does “Good for your Health. Good for the Planet.” really mean?
It means we design every layer with care- from materials that nurture your body to production and packaging that protect the Earth. Every OVO pad connects menstrual wellness to planetary well-being.
How often should I change my OVO pad?
We recommend changing your pad every 4 hours or less, depending on your flow. This helps maintain freshness, comfort, and hygiene throughout your cycle.
Do keep in mind that as they are made of natural fibers, they will feel different than plastic pads, and many people appreciate that. Keep in mind that this is a personal choice.
Do OVO pads have any fragrance or scent?
All OVO products are unscented to protect your skin from irritation and maintain a healthy pH balance.
What are Super Absorbent Polymers (SAPs)?
Super Absorbent Polymers (SAPs) are materials which can absorb and hold large amounts of liquids, up to thousands of times their weight. But their absorbency for blood can drop to about 50-100 times its weight.
They exist in both synthetic and natural forms. Natural forms are composed of biological components and include materials like cellulose and starch, while synthetic forms are typically petroleum-based and include polyacrylates and polyacrylamides.
Although these qualities may seem extremely beneficial, many synthetic SAPs are unfortunately not biodegradable and don’t break down easily in the environment, leading to a buildup of waste. SAPs are also marketed to be extremely effective at absorption, but their performance decreases based on the surrounding pH or increased ionic conditions.
OVO has no synthetic SAPs and are industrially compostable.*
Who is EcoMatcher? Why are you partnered with them?
EcoMatcher is a platform that provides avenues for companies to sustainably give back to the earth via tree-planting initiatives. Companies are able to purchase trees from EcoMatcher for their ESG initiatives and distribute them to customers, for employee benefits or as corporate gifts.
EcoMatcher provides resources, including geo-tagging/GPS tracking, photographs and local farming information to verify these initiatives. In partnership with EcoMatcher, we have established OVO GROVE, which is our sustainability-driven loyalty program that plants a real tree for every 75 points earned by a customer. Our products come from rich terrestrial ecosystems, and we hope to preserve them for many generations to come. We would also like to offset our carbon footprint, and we’d like our customers to have the chance to contribute to a larger cause against the climate change crisis. We believe OVO is a movement towards a better planet, and we hope to make a positive impact on the environment through our OVO GROVE.
What is cellulose?
Cellulose is an organic material which originates from the cell walls of plants. Cellulose has various beneficial qualities that make it a great ingredient for the absorbent core of OVO pads. Cellulose fibres are insoluble in water, and due to their chemical structure (containing many hydroxyl groups), it’s extremely absorbent.
What is a bioplastic?
Bioplastics are composed of polymers made from renewable biomass/biological sources, rather than petroleum-based substances. They can be categorised into either bio-based or biodegradable plastics.
A common misconception is that bioplastics are all biodegradable; however, this is not the case. If a bioplastic is bio-based, it is carbon-based and derived from natural, renewable materials (materials originating from other living organisms).
Bio-based bioplastics are not necessarily biodegradable. If a plastic is biodegradable, it can be broken down by microorganisms, like bacteria and fungi, and can reenter the surrounding environment as a natural substance (water, CO2, and biomass).
How do OVO products break down in the environment? Do they release toxins?
OVO products are made of eco-friendly, plastic-free ingredients, which respect both your body and the environment. Through the use of bamboo-based materials, OVO products mainly contain cellulose fibres, plant-based bioplastics, and paper components.
The OVO packaging consists of a paper wrapper and biobased adhesive, and is contained in a box made from recycled cardboard. OVO products are industrially compostable according to EN 13432, which means that the pads reach 90% degradation in 90 days through industrial composting. OVO products don’t contain petroleum-based ingredients like many synthetic plastics; therefore, they don’t leave behind harmful microplastics and other chemical residues in surrounding ecosystems.
OVO products are cyclical, created from plant-based sources, and designed to return to the earth.
What about the OVO product packaging?
OVO packaging has two separate components: a wrapper that surrounds the pad itself and a durable outer box. The wrapper is made of paper and has a silicone-coated release paper, and the box is constructed from recycled cardboard. OVO packaging is plant-based and doesn’t contain plastics or other materials which may harm the environment.
